Students protest after School in Srinagar refuses entry to girls wearing Abaya
On 8th June, students of Vishwa Bharati Higher Secondary School in Srinagar’s Rainawari area held a protest against the school authorities on not being allowed to enter the premises wearing ‘Abaya’, an apparel Muslim women wear to cover themselves.
As reported by Free Press Kashmir, one of the protesting students said that they were not allowed to enter the school premises wearing ‘Abaya’ following an order from the school principal. She said that the principal asked the students not to enter the school premises with ‘Abaya’, and asked them to go to Madrasah (traditional Islamic seminary) instead if they want to wear it.
The curtailment of Muslim women’s right to wear the dress of their choice is on a rise in BJP-ruled India.
