Writers, scholars raise concerns over shrinking space for dissent in Kashmir SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir…
On 26th August, Kashmir Valley’s chief cleric and pro-freedom leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was disallowed to lead the Friday prayers at the prominent Jamia mosque in Srinagar. Mirwaiz was stopped by police outside the gate of his residence when he was leaving for the mosque. Earlier, in an interview with BBC Hindi, Indian colonial governor in Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, had falsely claimed that Mirwaiz was not under detention and was a “free man”. Mirwaiz has been under house-arrest since 2019.[17]
