Writers, scholars raise concerns over shrinking space for dissent in Kashmir SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir…
On December 20th, a residential house in the name of deceased pro-freedom Syed Ali Geelani was among the three properties which were seized by the Indian authorities[7]. The seizure was carried out under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, a draconian law that the Indian state has weaponized to detain Kashmiri political dissidents and their family members, expel Kashmiri employees who are said to have pro-freedom “views”, and to confiscate their properties and dispossess them of their basic rights. The seizure is part of India’s systematic crackdown on Kashmiri political activists, particularly the socio-religious organization Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). Previously, on 17th December, the Indian state investigation agency had seized 11 properties that they alleged belonged to JeI[8].
