Indian military forces carried out several massacres across Kashmir. Protests intensify and Hindu nationalist bureaucrat Jagmohan is installed as the governor. On January 21, an estimated 55-65 unarmed protesters were killed by Indian troops near Gawakadal in Srinagar. On January 25, Indian forces killed 21 protestors in Handwara town.
