India took the case of Kashmir to the United Nations. Kashmir was officially recognized as a disputed territory. The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution (UNSC Resolution 47) providing for an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, withdrawal of Pakistani and Indian troops from the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and a plebiscite in Kashmir (under international supervision with minimal Indian military presence).
